Winter Retreat

Each winter, we offer a cozy, half-day retreat for graduate students and postdocs with teaching experience to explore and develop their teaching practices. Focused around a special topic, the Winter Retreat features an interactive keynote address, related workshops to implement evidence-driven teaching techniques in the classroom, and an opportunity to connect with peers over our popular hot chocolate bar.

Overview

In winter quarter, we offer a cozy, half-day retreat for graduate students and postdocs with teaching experience to explore and develop their teaching practice. Each retreat is built around a special topic, featuring an interactive keynote address to spark curiosity, workshops to implement leading-edge techniques in the classroom, and community discussions to gather together over our popular hot chocolate bar. The 2024 Winter Retreat will feature an "Unconference" format to allow participants to explore topics in learning and teaching that spark their interest.

Eligibility

Graduate students and postdocs who have completed at least one quarter of instruction or TAship at Northwestern are welcome to apply.

Application or Registration

Registration for the 2024 Winter Retreat is now open! 

Please register before Friday, February 16. 

Because the goal of the Winter Retreat is to be participant-driven, we are capping registration at 25 people but will offer it twice to accommodate more people.

Schedule

The 2024 Winter Retreat will be hosted twice, with similar schedules. 

  • 10 AM - 10:45 AM: Welcome & Keynote 
  • 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM: Interactive Unconference Session 
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Lunch & Guided Reflections
